The Maverick

Art Direction, Editorial Design, Brand Evolution

The Maverick was more than a magazine—it was Colorado Mesa University’s storytelling engine. Originally known as MSC Mosaic, the publication was renamed The Maverick following the institution’s 2011 transition from Mesa State College to Colorado Mesa University. The first issue under the new name was launched in 2012, aligning with CMU’s evolving identity and broader ambitions.

In the masthead, we introduced the tagline: “A Magazine for Colorado Mesa University.” This wasn’t just a design choice—it was a philosophical shift. We wanted the magazine to move beyond its traditional identity as an alumni or foundation piece. Instead, we positioned The Maverick as a campus-wide periodical—one that explored academics, student life, innovation, community impact, and more. It became a space to reflect the full vibrancy of the Maverick experience—not just philanthropy, but purpose.

As one of the primary designers entrusted with this transformation, I helped lead The Maverick through two complete redesigns. The first reimagined the structure and tone to match the university’s new direction. Later, in collaboration with Lisa Smith, the other main designer at CMU, we guided a second evolution, refining the magazine’s visual system and bringing modern, story-first design principles into every issue.

Published three times a year and distributed to over 35,000 alumni worldwide, The Maverick remained proudly ad-free, preserving space for authentic storytelling and editorial depth. Balancing expressive layout, visual consistency, and institutional voice, I helped shape The Maverick into a flagship publication that bridged past and present—inviting connection, reflection, and pride on every page.
